 Summary and User Comments:
Not to be mistaken for a sports writer’s Associated Press Stylebook, this book teaches by example. It provides countless samples of real AP sports stories, from football and basketball to figure skating and NASCAR. These stories are accompanied by the commentary of award-winning sports writer Wilstein. This book also includes chapters on column-writing and enterprise reporting, all accompanied by excellent action photography. Though no technical skills or reporting basics are part of the content, this book is useful for providing examples that encourage sports writers to think beyond the usual post-game, “Team A defeated Team B”, coverage.

It focuses on finding new angles, organizing facts and writing for a high school-age audience. Hawthorne begins with a plea to high school journalists: Stop filling newspapers with dull, common-knowledge information about pep rallies, club meetings and football games. Organization begins with basic skills and builds upon them, while using real stories from high school newspapers and sidebars to illustrate.
