Many programs are held at the state and regional level by state scholastic press associations. Be sure to check with your local association in addition to perusing this list.

  • The Arkansas Scholastic Press Association sponsors the Summer Publications Workshop for Teachers and Students at Ouachita Baptist University. Contact Beth Shull.

California

  • The California Scholastic Press Association will hold its summer journalism workshop at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.
  • Camp STN Los Angeles is a four-day free video journalism training program for Los Angeles teachers.
  • Newsroom by the Bay at Stanford University is a weeklong journalism camp for students and advisers focusing on 21st century journalism skills.
  • Newspapers2 will hold its adviser workshop at California State University, Long Beach. It teaches all the basics an adviser needs to know.
  • digital RENOvation from the Journalism Education Association of Northern California is for both students and advisers. The focus is on convergence journalism.

  • The Intensive Journalistic Writing Institute will be hosting a workshop to help teachers use journalistic writing in their AP English Language & Composition/journalism classes in Washington, D.C. This year it will be at The Washington Post. If interested, contact Carol Lange.

  • Getting into Multimedia is sponsored by HSBJ and The National Press Club. CEU credits will be available for this three-day, intensive workshop.

  • The New England Scholastic Press Association sponsors a summer workshop, How to Advise a Scholastic News Publication, at Boston University in the College of Communication.

  • Michigan Interscholastic Press Association and Michigan State University sponsor summer journalism programs for students and advisers.

  • The National Scholastic Press Association holds its summer workshop for students and teachers at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
  • Jostens Adviser University focuses on strategy and methodology for advisers of yearbooks, newspapers and magazines.

Mississippi

  • The Mississippi Workshop for High School Journalism Teachers is held at the University of Mississippi. Contact Beth Fitts for details.

Missouri

  • The University of Missouri in Columbia offers a Summer Media Workshop for yearbook and newspaper students. It has units for beginners and advanced students with special sections on photography and desktop publishing.

  • Columbia Scholastic Press Association will hold its Summer Journalism Workshop, at Columbia University.
  • The Newhouse School at Syracuse University will host Advising 101. Contact Sherri Taylor for more information.
  • Camp STN New York is a four-day free video journalism training program for New York City teachers.
  • Looking for teachers who teach critical thinking to the first generation that lives on social media.
     It's the fifth annual Summer Institute for News Literacy Teachers at Stony Brook University.

  • The Journalism Education Association holds an adviser retreat at the First Amendment Center in Nashville.

Texas

  • Gloria Shields All-American Publications Workshop will hold several classes for students and advisers on a variety of editorial and advertising subjects. It will take place at the Harvey Hotel DFW near D/FW Airport.
  • Allen (Texas) High School will host the Association of Texas Photography Instructors' Summer Workshop for Instructors Only.
  • The University of Texas at Austin hosts the ILPC Summer Workshop for students and advisers. Students with a variety of skill levels and interests will have a chance to attend specific sequences.
  • Balfour, a yearbook publishing company, offers two workshops for beginning and experienced yearbook advisers: one day of technical training and/or three days of adviser training learn more. Classes are taught by teachers with years of advising experience register online.

  • The Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers puts on its J-Camp at Virginia Tech for students and teachers.

  • The Washington Journalism Education Association hosts its Summer Workshop on the campus of Western Washington University.
