We are collecting tips from high school newspaper advisers nationwide on how to run student publications and deal with the issues from administrators, students and parents.

Minimum standards

Minimum standards

As with any job, a reporting job has certain minimum performance standards. In case you might have forgotten those miminum requirements, here they are again:

  • Meet copy deadlines
  • Include at least two sources on every story, unless exempted by an editor
  • Learn the stylebook
  • Spell check copy before filing
  • Run your beat daily, unless exempted by an editor
  • Advance all regular meetings
  • ALWAYS check on any action taken following executive session
  • If you break a story, follow it
  • If you are absent, make sure your regular beat is covered
  • Sign in and out when you enter and leave the newsroom
  • Check out with editor(s) before leaving for the day
