5 things administrators and counselors can do to nurture good journalism

Good journalism is nurtured by advisers and administrators who care. Here are some key guidelines that will help an adminstrator or counselor avoid potential minefields before they happen.

  1. Establish policies to aid in thorough, accurate and effective reporting.
  2. Encourage critical thinking and decision-making skills so students become more productive future citizens.
  3. Empower advisers using professionally oriented and substantive curriculum.
  4. Maintain open lines of communication at all levels: students, teachers, administrators and community members.
  5. Encourage students to report accurately and thoroughly, using a range of diverse and qualified sources.
