Battle Born Derby Demon jammers get ready to take off. - Kara Jeffers

Blood, sweat and tears. These are the things that dedicated athletes give to their sport, and the women of the local roller derby teams are no exception.

Don’t let their small statures fool you. These diverse groups of women bring their all to each practice, meeting three days a week in downtown Reno. The two local teams share the space, alternating practice time six nights a week.

“The Reno Roller Girls skate Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and Battle Born skate Tuesday, Thursdays and Sunday,” said Creature Feature, a recent graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, who has been involved with both teams since 2010.

There is a lot of work that goes into developing, maintaining and supporting a roller derby team that happens outside of practice time. The girls began in the summer of 2006 with just seven members who had a passion for skating. Since then, they have gained members and fans, but it takes money and time to keep going.

“In our spare time, we are board members or we are a part of an events team,” Battle Born Derby Demon Anita Jambayou said. “This is a non-profit organization, run from the ground up by derby girls.”

The teams do a lot of promoting leading up to the events and bouts. They put on self-promotional events as well as community events to raise money for themselves and other non-profits in the area. Jambayou said that they are just trying to get their names out there and get support from the community.

“We are trying to establish ourselves,” she said. “We are an apprentice team. We’re working on going national.”

The girls are trying to build themselves up in the community to help them achieve their goal of representing Reno as a nationally ranked team. They practice and plan events in their spare time and after their day jobs.

“We’ve got teachers, construction workers and high school students,” Creature Feature said. “We don’t really make money, but all of us are here because we just love derby.”

The girls have a bout Saturday, July 21 at The Rink on the River, located at 10 N. Virginia St. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout begins at 7 p.m. They encourage everyone to come out and see what derby is all about.

These girls have great names - perhaps it would be interesting to find out how they chose them or where they came from

You know that this is fake, right? I remember watching roller derby on Saturday afternoon before Big Time Wrestling. That being said, I loved your interview and might go down to watch practice since I'm in Reno one more night.
