Any of you who have been on the internet probably already know about trolling. Those people who go online, post hate comments, spam, or other stupid stuff just to be annoying and get attention.

Trolling probably began in the 1990s with the phrase ‘Trolling for newbies’ (Wikipedia) by internet veterans who would tease new people chatting on forums and such.

However, this quickly escalated to the point where it was heavily frowned upon.

Trolling affects many users. Whether it’s commenters on the Danegeld newspaper, where you can’t post a comment anonymously, or racist and bigoted comments on youtube videos, facebook photos, etc.

Trolling isn’t always serious, a lot of times pranks are called ‘trolling’. (However, pranks outside of technology DOES NOT COUNT AS TROLLING.) Pranks such as Google’s April Fools’ Day jokes are often considered trolling, and in the pictures in this article there are some hilarious ones.

But most of the time trolling is being rude, and most of the time they’re anonymous because they’re too cowardly to face up to their rudeness. So to all of you who have trolled: STOP IT.

And finally, here are ways to spot a troll:

1)      If they are anonymous, not using their real names, or using an obviously fake name.

2)      If they don’t use their own photo, that can be a warning sign.

3)      They are obviously posting things to be annoying.

4)      Multiple people posting the exact same post (it’s probably the same user, but different posts.)

5)      Giving obviously false and incorrect advice.

6)      If they post a link (especially when the link has nothing to do with the topic on a forum).
