Squeezing in to Truckee, California
Squeeze In offers a large variety of omelettes to match anyone's taste - Kara Jeffers

Luckily for the residents of Reno, waking up and craving a huge delicious breakfast is something that they can easily take care of, and without much work.

When faced with this dilemma on a Saturday morning, a quick Google search had me headed to Squeeze In, a restaurant that has proclaimed their omelettes to be “The best omelettes on the planet.” After perusing the ratings on Yelp, it seemed to me that everyone else agreed with the restaurant’s bold proclamation. This was a no-brainer. Who wouldn’t want to see what this excitement was all about?

A quick drive to Truckee, Calif., had me prepared to experience an omelette that would put all other omelettes to shame. I did not expect such a sweet, quirky little diner to provide the planet with such a monster of a breakfast.

Driving through the historical district of Truckee was an experience in itself. While one side of the street provides beautiful views of the mountains, the other offers a variety of small, locally owned shops filled with interesting, unique objects, art and gifts.

After a walk down the street, Squeeze In appeared in front of me, as if the town had been built around it. Like all of the shops we passed, Squeeze In was filled inside and out with small unique details. From the antique Victorian lamps and the bicycle hanging from the ceiling to the walls covered in writing from past visitors, this breakfast diner is filled with charm.

After a short wait, I was led to a table. The wait staff at the restaurant seemed pretty laid back. The customers sign themselves in during a wait and then seat themselves at the table they are told. Once seated, the workers buzzed by, waiting on any table that seemed to need anything. We had to ask for menus, but the relaxed attitude makes it easy to not sweat the small stuff.

The menu was huge. It is amazing what people can do with eggs. Any imaginable combination of ingredients is probably on the Squeeze In menu. Even the pickiest eater can find something that he will like.

After scrutinizing the seemingly never-ending menu, I chose The Spanish Flay, which was added to the menu after Squeeze In’s appearance on the Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.”

I knew I made the right decision when my gigantic omelette arrived, surrounded by home-style fried spudz, Honey Wheatberry toast, and an amazing tomato pesto sauce. The omelette was jam packed with red peppers, potatoes and jack cheese. The potatoes were fried to perfection with just enough crunch and perfectly matched with the tomato pesto sauce, a righteous suggestion from the waitress. There was not a thing to be changed about this meal.

For anyone looking for breakfast in the Reno area, Squeeze in is not to be missed. If you don’t have the time to make the short drive to Truckee, don’t worry; the owners of Squeeze In have made it easy for their customers. Two Reno locations have opened up since 2008, one on the south end of town and one up north. Don’t miss out on the best omelette on the planet!
