On pointe: Senior Briana Parkman will attend Oakland University with a dance scholarship. She has also auditioned to dance with the traveling Rockettes dance troupe. - Jasmine Love

Many seniors received college scholarships for skills ranging from playing basketball to cooking meals.

Carlton Brundidge received the largest award - a basketball scholarship worth $100,000 to the University of Michigan. "Use basketball, don’t let it use you," said Brundidge, who hopes to inspire other athletes.

Tashionna Threatt received a culinary scholarship for $5,000 a year to The Art Institute of Michigan’s culinary school in Novi. To earn the scholarship, she entered a contest similar to TV’s "Top Chef." She competed against 40 other students, who each had to prepare a three-course gourmet meal. "After the first round, there were only nine (chefs) left, then I won it all," said Threatt. Her dish was a sautéed chicken breast with Chardonnay sauce, rice pilaf, sautéed broccoli, and a shrimp cocktail. It landed her first place in the "2011 Best Teen Chef Competition."

Cierra Rowe received an academic scholarship for $10,000 a year to Oakland University and another academic scholarship for $2,000 a year to Wayne State University.

Briana Parkman received a dance scholarship for $3,500 a year to Oakland University. Parkman does all types of dance, including ballet, tap and jazz. "Dance is my inspiration, and I am definitely going to dance in college," said Parkman.

Her college dance audition was before a panel of four judges. She and the other auditioning students took a ballet class then had to perform a ballet number, then they took a jazz class and had to perform a jazz number, then each was allowed to perform a solo of his or her choosing. Parkman says she performed a contemporary dance number, which the judges liked.

Lawrence Hill received an academic scholarship for $10,500 a year to Central Michigan University and another scholarship to the same college for $4,000 a year for academics.

Class Valedictorian Rashad Timmons received an academic scholarship for $10,000 a year to Columbia College and another scholarship for $1,000 a year to Wayne State University, but he says he plans to attend Michigan State University, where he says he received grants totalling more than the scholarships he received elsewhere.

Cheyenne Peters received an academic scholarship for $8,000 a year to Michigan State University. "I’ve always wanted to go to Michigan State University, so I am really excited I got this scholarship," Peters said, wearing a Michigan State hoodie.

Austyn Driver received a creative scholarship for $20,000 to Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. The scholarship is slated to be given to her in increments of $5,000 over four years.

To earn her scholarship, Driver prepared an art portfolio showcasing her drawing and graphic design skills. She had to show her portfolio to judges at her admissions interview. "Art isn’t just your everyday painting and drawing," said Driver. "It’s whatever you want it to be."
